How much does test and tag cost in Australia in 2026?

Ruchira Samaraweera Director, Operations 10 min read

For standard workplace electrical equipment, published Australian test-and-tag prices in 2026 commonly use a per-item rate plus a service, attendance or minimum charge. Public rates vary considerably between providers, site locations and job sizes. PlanetSafe’s published rates are $2.10 to $3.50 per item plus a $120 service fee per visit, ex GST, with the per-item rate reducing as volume increases.

The useful number is rarely the advertised price per tag alone. Attendance fees, travel, multiple sites, specialised equipment, access conditions and what the reporting actually covers can all shift the final invoice.

What does test and tag cost per item?

There is no single national per-item price.

Among the public provider prices and pricing guides reviewed for this article on 19 August 2026, per-item rates ranged from the low-$2 to mid-$3 range, while one broader Australian pricing guide estimated rates reaching approximately $9.50 per item. The spread reflects different pricing structures, job sizes and scopes.

These are published prices and estimates, not a regulated industry tariff or a definitive national average. Providers can change pricing, and the scope behind apparently similar rates can differ.

What are PlanetSafe’s test and tag rates?

PlanetSafe publishes four volume tiers:

Number of items Rate per item
1–50$3.50
51–300$3.20
301–1,000$2.70
1,000+$2.10

A $120 service fee applies per visit. All prices are ex GST.

The rate includes the standard testing engagement, biodegradable tags, a digital asset register, compliance report, failure records and retest tracking. Biodegradable tags are standard rather than a paid sustainability upgrade.

How is a test and tag quote calculated?

For a straightforward job:

number of items × applicable per-item rate + service or attendance fee

An 85-item site at PlanetSafe’s current published pricing:

85 × $3.20 + $120 = $392 ex GST

That formula matters when comparing providers. A lower headline rate does not necessarily produce a lower invoice — a provider quoting $2.80 per item with separate travel, reporting or attendance charges may cost more overall than a higher per-item rate with those items bundled in.

What would 50, 120 or 500 items cost with PlanetSafe?

Using PlanetSafe’s published pricing checked on 19 August 2026:

Approximate item count Calculation Estimated visit cost, ex GST
25 items25 × $3.50 + $120$207.50
50 items50 × $3.50 + $120$295
85 items85 × $3.20 + $120$392
120 items120 × $3.20 + $120$504
300 items300 × $3.20 + $120$1,080
500 items500 × $2.70 + $120$1,470
1,200 items1,200 × $2.10 + $120$2,640

These examples assume one visit and standard test-and-tag scope. Additional services or separate visits change the total.

Why does the price per item fall on larger jobs?

The testing work still happens asset by asset, but part of the cost of delivering a visit is fixed. A technician travels to the site, completes setup and administration, prepares equipment and produces reporting whether the site contains 20 assets or 500.

When more items are tested during the same engagement, those fixed costs spread across a larger base. That is why volume pricing is common across published Australian test-and-tag price lists.

Is there usually a call-out or service fee?

Often, yes — though providers label it differently: call-out fee, minimum charge, service fee or attendance fee.

Public Australian pricing shows several models. Local Test & Tag publishes a $89.95 minimum service charge, Shock Safe lists a $30 service/admin fee for jobs under 50 appliances, and TIS Electrics’ 2026 market guide estimates minimum charges around $100–$250.

When comparing quotes, check whether the service fee is per booking, per technician, per site or per visit.

Do regional sites cost more?

They can.

Travel is one of the variables that makes two apparently similar quotes materially different. Local Test & Tag, for example, states that its published rates apply to its nominated local service area and that additional charges may apply outside it.

PlanetSafe uses the same published per-item rates across metro and regional Australia and currently states that it does not charge travel fees.

For a multi-site organisation, travel policy can matter almost as much as the per-item rate.

How does multi-site pricing work?

Multi-site quotes need two numbers: the total asset volume and the number of visits required.

PlanetSafe aggregates item counts across sites for volume-tier pricing. The $120 service fee applies per visit. A three-site organisation with approximately 900 items in total:

900 × $2.70 + 3 × $120 = $2,790 ex GST

Consolidating sites under one provider can also give the organisation a single testing schedule, consistent records and one reporting format across the portfolio.

What should be included in the quoted price?

Before comparing quotes, establish what the per-item rate actually covers.

PlanetSafe’s standard rate includes:

  • inspection and electrical testing;
  • biodegradable compliance tags;
  • individual asset records;
  • pass/fail information;
  • next-test dates;
  • digital compliance reporting;
  • compliance report;
  • failure records;
  • retest tracking.

A cheaper quote is not directly comparable if reporting, asset registers, travel or follow-up administration sit outside the advertised rate. The physical tag is only one output from the visit — for facilities and procurement teams, the records are what matters afterwards.

Do failed items cost more to test?

Not with PlanetSafe. A failed item is charged at the same testing rate as an item that passes. Repair or replacement, where requested, is a separate service and can be quoted separately.

Source: PlanetSafe pricing

When comparing providers, ask how failed assets are recorded and whether failure reporting is included in the standard price.

What other charges can affect a test and tag quote?

The basic per-item rate may not cover every type of equipment or every operating condition. Variables that can appear as separate line items include:

  • three-phase equipment;
  • microwave leakage testing;
  • RCD testing;
  • emergency and exit light testing;
  • repairs or replacement parts;
  • multiple separate visits;
  • restricted site access;
  • after-hours requirements;
  • provider travel charges where applicable.

These should be itemised in the quote rather than hidden inside an ambiguous per-tag rate.

PlanetSafe publishes add-on pricing where a standard rate applies and quotes site-specific services separately.

Does testing frequency affect the annual cost?

Yes. The cost of one visit is only part of the budget — the longer-term cost depends on which assets need retesting and when.

AS/NZS 3760:2022 uses equipment, use and operating environment to inform inspection and testing intervals rather than assigning one blanket interval to every workplace. A mixed site can have different groups of equipment on different testing schedules.

PlanetSafe’s detailed frequency guide →

For budgeting, map the testing schedule before multiplying one visit by a fixed annual frequency.

How should procurement compare two test and tag quotes?

Put both quotes on the same scope before comparing the totals.

Check:

  • Per-item rate — and the volume threshold that applies.
  • Service/minimum fee — and whether it is charged per site or per visit.
  • Travel — especially across regional or multi-site portfolios.
  • Reporting — individual asset register, failures and next-test dates.
  • Additional equipment — what sits outside standard test-and-tag pricing.
  • Retest management — whether the provider tracks the next cycle.
  • GST — whether advertised figures include or exclude it.

The cheapest per-item figure can still produce the more expensive or less useful engagement once those differences are included.

Is GST included in PlanetSafe’s pricing?

No. PlanetSafe’s published prices are ex GST, with GST added at invoice.

Source: PlanetSafe pricing

Worth checking when comparing online prices — providers do not always display pricing on the same GST basis.

Is there a minimum job size?

PlanetSafe does not publish a minimum item count. Small jobs attract the normal service fee and the applicable 1–50 item rate.

Source: PlanetSafe pricing

On a very small site, the service fee makes up a larger share of the total invoice, which is why the all-in cost matters more than the per-item figure at the lower end.

What is the easiest way to estimate your test and tag cost?

Start with a rough asset count. You do not need a perfect inventory — count the obvious powered equipment, chargers, leads, power boards and portable appliances across the areas being tested, then use that figure to establish the likely pricing tier.

PlanetSafe’s calculator updates the per-item tier and estimated total from the item count →

For multiple sites, include the approximate item count at each location so the quote can account for both total volume and the number of visits.
